Tobacco Abuse

Tobacco abuse has been cited as the primary avoidable cause of death and illness in our society. Each year in the United States 400,000 people die as a direct result of its use. It is the only legally available addictive drug sold without a prescription in our country.

Smoking is a known cause of cancer, heart disease, stroke, bronchitis and emphysema. Almost 1/4 of the American population uses this drug, and its use among adolescents is on the rise.

Nicotine effects both the muscles and the brain. It relaxes the skeletal muscles and causes the brain to be in an alert state. These are obviously conflicting effects, and their combined effects make our treatment with OMT difficult.

To confuse matters more this drug has properties that make it very attractive.

Auricular Medicine

Auricular Medicine is the practice of an acupuncture technique on the ear that effects the entire body. It originated in France by a man named Charles Nogier.

It deals with all of the different organs at many different levels. For instance, the day after your first visit you will come back for a recheck. At this visit many people report irritability and respond to treatment of the "anger" point.

How many needles and how long does it take?

We do most of this treatment with our cold laser. There are 1 to 2 very small needles that we use that stay in for a whole week. These needles are so small most people don't even feel them.  Once in, the long term needle have a bandage covering them that is very small. Rarely, the needles that are left in place may cause some irritation and can be removed.

The next day on your return visit you are checked for secondary points. These are treated with the pain-free cold laser again.

The long term needle needs to be stimulated at least 3 times a day and when you feel the urge to smoke. This is done by putting your hand near your ear so that you feel its heat. Then you move your hand in a circular clockwise manner. This principle uses your own electromagnetic field to stimulate the needle.

Your Preparation

Your last cigarette should be 4-6 hours before your appointment. This allows your body to develop a withdrawal state, which makes it easier to identify the "addiction" point to the nicotine.

Also, it is recommended that your urine is alkalinized by eating fruit, taking alka seltzer or decreasing meat for the 24 hour before treatment.

All of your jewelry needs to be removed 5 minutes prior to treatment. Bringing in 1 cigarette to the office will help identify the point.
