At ABODE Integrated Medicine (AIM) the cornerstone is Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM). Although manual types of treatment have been practiced historically in many cultures over t

Still’s Technique: Andrew Taylor Still, M.D. founded the osteopathic profession, but he did not believe in teaching techniques. He believed in teaching anatomy, physiology and body mechanics. He felt that with this knowledge in mind it would be possible for the physician to find the health underlying the dis-ease. Only recently has Dr. Still’s techniques been systematically reconstructed into a treatment approach.

Strain-Counterstrain: This type of treatment was pioneered by Larry Jones, D.O. in a desperate attempt to treat a patient with back pain. The patient came into his office stating that he had been awake for 3 days and could not even stand up straight. He had seen a multiple of other physicians, including reputable chiropractors and osteopaths. Dr. Jones decided that he could come out of this looking pretty good if he could just find a way to make the man comfortable enough to sleep. He did and he found out that if you put a muscle in a relaxed state the nerve to that muscle may be able to reset itself.

Percussor Technique: This type of OMM was pioneered by Robert Fulford, D.O. Dr. Fulford came from an industrial background and was trained that it was always better ‘to have a machine do the work for you.’ The percussor is theorized to work on many different levels to:

Release joints: instead of one big ‘crack’, which changes the joint fluid, there is a progressive pumping action on the joint fluid.

  • Relieve tense muscles
    Reset nerves
Release fascia: fascia is the connective tissue that surrounds and invests nearly every aspect of our bodies tissues. Restrictions in the fascia can both result in pain and more work for our bodies.

Dr. Fulford has been a mentor to many physicians besides myself, including Andrew Weil, M.D. Weil featured Dr. Fulford in the second chapter of his book Spontaneous Healing. Before his passing Dr. Fulford wrote a book of his own, Dr. Fulford’s Touch of Health.

Functional Technique: This type of treatment was pioneered by the father of one of my mentors, Lon Hoover, D.O. and refined by another of my mentors, William Johnston, D.O. While one is derived from the other they are both effective, but very different. Some recognize it as being very similar to the Still technique.

Muscle Energy Technique: This is another technique pioneered by the father of one of my mentors, Fred Mitchell, Jr. This uses your own muscle contractions to pull the bone into place and to reset the muscles and fascia.

Relieve lymphatic congestion: Lymphatic fluid collects in areas that are not working correctly. The rhythmic action of the percussor pumps the congested fluid out.
